How Can You Treat Melasma?

Did you know that melasma is a fairly common skin condition?  Patches of dark skin on your face that do not match your natural skin tone may be caused by melasma.  This article will discuss what melasma is and how it can be treated.  If you have noticed these types of patches, then you may want to come see us for treatment!

Melasma can be treated through topical creams, but these do not always work.  Chemical peels, microneedling, intense pulsed light (IPL), and laser treatments are all effective methods for treating melasma.  These procedures can all be performed at a med spa.

Fountain of You is a boutique-style med spa with locations in Melbourne, FL, and Merritt, Island, FL.  Under the guidance of Dr. Kim Zipper, our nurses and aestheticians provide professional, compassionate care to all of our clients.  We understand that melasma can be embarrassing and frustrating.  We are trained to treat melasma using the above-mentioned treatments.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a hyper-pigmentation of the skin.  In other words, it is a skin condition that causes dark patches on the skin.  It often occurs during pregnancy with up to 50% of pregnant women experiencing it.  For some people, it is temporary and will go away with treatment.  This is particularly true if it is due to hormones because hormones can change, returning your skin to its usual appearance.  For others, it is a long-lasting skin condition that requires professional treatment.  You may have already tried topical creams prescribed by a dermatologist that did not produce the desired results.  Don’t give up hope!  There are multiple treatments available that have been shown to be effective in treating melasma.

Chemical Peels

At Fountain of You, we use TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) peels.  We know that the word “acid” can sound scary.  These chemical peels provide skin resurfacing by removing the top layer of skin.  This allows new, undamaged skin to grow in its place.  This may sound a little gross, but our top skin layers are actually very thin.  Realize that when you get a scrape, you are removing multiple layers of skin, not just the surface layers.  One of the great things about TCA peels is that the chemical solution used can be adjusted based on the depth of the peel required to achieve maximum results.

Microneedling

At Fountain of You, we use the top-of-the-line Vivace RF Microneedle.  It uses gold-tipped needles placed closely together so it glides smoothly over the skin.  Microneedling can also be adjusted based on the depth required to achieve the desired results.  Microneedling will be followed with a skin serum chosen specifically for your skin’s needs.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light therapy is also referred to as photorejuvenation.  A handheld device is used by our trained technician to deliver the pulsed light.  This procedure targets the deeper layers of the skin.  This prompts the body’s healing process which works its way up to the surface layers of the skin. IPL also promotes collagen production so that you may get more youthful-looking skin along with the removal of the hyperpigmentation!

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments are a more intense treatment than IPL therapy.  At Fountain of You, we use the Cool Peel CO2 Laser Resurfacing Treatment.  Laser resurfacing targets the surface layers of the skin.  Damaged skin tissue is removed.  Collagen production occurs,  providing a benefit to your skin.

Conclusion
