Paleo for Everyone

Have you ever stopped to think about how much food is a part of our lives? Everywhere you turn something is available for consumption. This makes things complex in our food saturated culture, especially for those of us who want to eat the highest quality foods we can. Think about it. We are fortunate to live in a time where foods of all types are readily available. If you never want to cook a meal again, you have multiple choices at your fingertips. You could go through a drive-thru (we aren’t advocating that) or head to the grocery store for a prepped meal. There are several food delivery services that drop off pre-made healthy meals no matter where you are. We have choices all around us, and at times those choices can be our downfall. How do you know where to start when it comes to eating the healthiest way possible? How do you choose quality foods that fuel you for the day ahead? Let’s dive a little deeper.

The closer a food is to its natural form, the better. Tomatoes from the garden, not from a can. Beef from cows that are free-range and grass fed. Wild caught game and organic free-range eggs along with nuts, seeds, and high-quality fats are all great for keeping you satiated. If you have to open a box or pop off a lid, chances are you are not getting the most nutrient dense foods available. The Paleo Diet is one that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins. Gone are packaged and processed foods along with dairy, legumes, grains, and alcohol. If our ancestors could find and consume it, so can we.

Wait…did you just read no dairy or legumes? And what are legumes anyway?

You read right. First off, legumes are a type of plant that produces its fruit inside of a pod. Think of peanuts and beans. For a pretty exhaustive list, click here. Paleo also excludes dairy for the most part. There is some debate on this aspect, however. It is assumed that most Paleolithic eaters did not consume dairy, but that does not mean that everyone who follows the Paleo diet adheres to this stance. In general, if dairy is going to be a part of your life, make sure it is from grass-fed organic sources.

If this seems overwhelming, take heart. It is easy to get caught up in the “rules” of a prescribed “diet.” Your journey to wellness becomes a lifestyle when you make the best choices you can with the information and foods available to you. Perfection is not the goal, progress is. We are highlighting the Paleo diet here at Fountain of You because it promotes whole, clean, unprocessed foods. Foods, we can pronounce! Foods that are actually foods and not lab made creations. We encourage our clients to get back to the basics when it comes to the things they put into their bodies. You do not have to make dramatic changes in your diet overnight. Begin by being aware of the food you are eating and when you are ready, begin the process of changing what you consume.
