Who Regulates The Cosmetic Industry?

Drugstore shelves and department store cosmetic counters are filled with a variety of cosmetics promising to turn you into the best version of yourself. Foundations and primers promise to fill in any fine lines and wrinkles, making the years disappear. If you choose that perfect shade of red lipstick, there will be nothing you cannot conquer. Cosmetic companies are quick to make claims about the validity of their products, and there are also promises made with every cosmetic purchase you make. With so many promises being touted by just about every cosmetic company, how can you know if what are purchasing is up to the task it claims to solve? One way is to ask the anti-aging experts at Fountain of You. We are specifically trained in the art of skincare and anti-aging treatments, so we can point you in the right direction. No question is too small!

When it comes to the regulation of ingredients in cosmetics, you may be wondering who is in charge of making sure the things you put on your face and body are safe. The answer is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Interestingly enough, the FDA does not approve cosmetics. There is a clear distinction between approval and regulation and this is something that many consumers do not know. The FDA does not have the authority to control all of the ingredients that make up your everyday beauty products. The only FDA approval needed for a cosmetic pertains to the color additives and a small number of additional ingredients. A full list of these prohibited items can be found here.

It falls upon the cosmetic company to properly label their products. This is where the FDA can and will intervene. If a company makes false claims about their product or the FDA deems the product misbranded or adulterated, the FDA will get involved. Companies must be truthful in their labeling and it is upon them to ensure that proper instructions and information be provided. It is assumed that when a given cosmetic product is used in the way it is intended by consumers who are properly following the directions clearly established on the label, there will be no ill effects.
