There is a common misconception surrounding Botox and dermal fillers – many people think they’re one and the same. While Botox and dermal fillers do have a lot of similarities, there are a few key differences. When considering whether you should opt for Botox or a dermal filler like Bellafill, Juvederm, Radiesse, or Restylane – it’s important to know how each works and what they treat.

At Fountain of You Med Spa, we specialize in anti-aging and aesthetic services including Botox in Melbourne, FL.  We also offer an array of dermal fillers, lip injections, and laser hair removal treatments. This week, we’d like to go over the differences between Botox and dermal fillers to give you an idea of what aesthetic treatment is right for you.

How Does Botox Work?

Both Botox and facial fillers are primarily used to reduce lines and wrinkles, fighting the signs of aging. The way they do this, though, varies. Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, reduces the movements of facial muscles that cause wrinkles. This helps the face, neck, or whatever area is treated, to appear smoother and rejuvenated.

Hoes Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are generally made from hyaluronic acid that is injected into the skin to restore volume and smooth out wrinkles. So, both Botox and fillers can be used to achieve similar results, but the way they work is different.

Botox Treatment Areas

Not only do Botox and dermal fillers work differently, but they also treat different things. Botox is used to treat wrinkles that are caused by muscle movements. The lines around the mouth formed by smiling, the groove between the eyebrows from facial expressions, and lines around the eyes, or “crow’s feet,” all should respond well to Botox. This is because Botox is ideal for treating wrinkles and lines that are caused by muscle movements.

A different type of wrinkles – ones that are caused by the loss of volume due to aging or sagging skin – won’t usually benefit from Botox. These types of wrinkles, also known as “static wrinkles,” can be treated instead by dermal fillers. These fillers plump up lips and restore volume to areas of the face and neck, including hollows in the cheeks and the sunken areas under the eyes.

Which Is Better?

This is a tricky question without a clear-cut answer. In fact, Botox and dermal fillers are often used in conjunction to get the best results. Botox works best for lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions, while fillers are great for other types of lines, wrinkles, and volume loss. Depending on the type of dermal filler, the amount of time the results last will vary, but fillers usually last longer than Botox does. Talk to your doctor or aesthetician about your concerns and the results you want to achieve, and they can help you make an informed decision about what will work best for you.
