Understanding Acne Scars

Let’s discuss the two common types of acne scars and why over-the-counter products aren’t typically sufficient to treat acne scars.

Atrophic acne scarsAtrophic acne scars encompass 80-90% of acne scars, making it the most common type.  It results in “pits” in your skin.  The most common atrophic scars are called “ice pick” scars and are small, deep indentations.  “Boxcar” scars are wider than ice pick scars in appearance.  Lastly, rolling scars are wider than they are deep.  All 3 of these types of atrophic scars consist of indentations in the skin.

Hypertrophic/Keloid scarsHypertrophic scars are raised scars and may be darker in color than the surrounding skin.  This type of scarring is the result of the overproduction of collagen when the skin is healing from acne. These scars are sometimes tender or itchy.

Some over-the-counter products, such as those containing salicylic acid, may help reduce acne scarring.  However, these products can be drying or irritating.  They also may not be as effective as the treatments you can receive from a professional.  Over-the-counter treatments may not penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and may not address the root cause of the scarring.

5 Best Acne Scar Treatments We Recommend

Microneedling Microneedling is administered through a handheld device consisting of dozens of very tiny needles.  We have found that combining microneedling with PRP treatment is an effective way to treat acne scarring.  PRP treatment is a Plasma-Rich Platelet treatment in which plasma from your own blood is infused into your skin, encouraging collagen production and tissue regeneration.  Microneedling is best for atrophic acne scars.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Our HELIX Laser Skin Resurfacing treatment targets both the superficial and deeper layers of skin.  It uses both fractional ablative and non-ablative lasers.  It is a fully customizable treatment, making it a great choice for a variety of skin types and needs. Laser skin resurfacing is best for moderate to severe acne scars.

Chemical Peels – We use Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) chemical peels at Fountain of You.  The concentration of chemicals can be adjusted for a shallow, medium, or deep peel.  TCA peels usually have better results than other types of peels.  While you will go through the process of your skin peeling, much like a sunburn, the end result will be worth it.  Chemical peels are best for surface-level scarring and discoloration.

Dermal Fillers – Fillers increase volume in the face, so they can be used to help fill in the pitted indentations from acne scarring.  This is a temporary fix, however.  For more lasting effects, you may want to combine one of the other treatments with dermal fillers to achieve both an immediate and a long-lasting effect.  Dermal fillers are helpful for rolling or boxcar scars.

Combination Treatment:  A Tailored Approach

When you meet with one of the professionals at Fountain of You, they will help you choose the treatment that is best for your skin type and specific scarring.  A combination treatment may yield the best results, such as Microneedling with PRP Treatment, as discussed above.  Additionally, a combination that provides immediate, as well as long-lasting results, may be a good choice for many people.  Dermal fillers can provide instant gratification, while laser skin resurfacing can bring about the lasting effects you desire.

What to Expect:  Results and Recovery

It’s important to understand that treating the deeper layers of skin to correct acne scarring will likely take multiple treatments.  With a little patience and consistency, you can achieve noticeable, long-lasting results.  Some treatments have little to no downtime.  And if you want immediate results, you can receive a treatment like dermal fillers.  They don’t treat the underlying cause of the scarring, but they will give you immediate results.
