DIM
DIM (diindoylmethane) is a naturally occurring plant phytonutrient that is found in cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kale. DIM can act as an estrogen balancer in both men and women by helping to increase the aerobic metabolism of estrogen to “good” estrogen metabolites. The breakdown products of estrogen in our bodies are mainly 2-hydroxy estrogen, 4-hydroxy estrogen and 16-hydroxy estrogen. 2-hydroxy estrogen is an anti-oxidizing estrogen, while 4 and 16 are oxidizing estrogens. The oxidizing forms are more likely to damage DNA through oxidation, which could lead to cancer. Therefore, lowering these two and increasing 2-hydroxy estrogen may reduce the risk of certain cancers like breast, uterine, cervical and prostate.
